Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. That's the part that surprises people most: they are not a diamond simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite. Chemically, physically, and optically, a lab-grown diamond is identical to a mined one — both are crystallized carbon in the same cubic structure. The only real difference is origin.

How they're made

Mined diamonds form over a billion-plus years under extreme heat and pressure deep in the earth's mantle, then get carried to the surface by volcanic activity. Lab-grown diamonds form the same crystal structure in a matter of weeks, using one of two processes: HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature), which recreates the conditions of natural formation, or CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition), which builds the crystal layer by layer from carbon-rich gas. Both produce genuine diamond — the process is faster, not different in kind.

What's actually different

  • Price. Lab-grown diamonds typically cost significantly less than a natural diamond of the same size and quality — often 60–80% less — because they skip the cost and scarcity of mining.
  • Traceability. Lab-grown origin is inherently known and verifiable, since the diamond's creation is documented from day one.
  • Grading. Both are graded on the same 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat) by the same major gemological labs. A lab-grown diamond's certificate will simply note its origin.

What isn't different

Hardness, brilliance, fire, and durability are identical — a lab-grown diamond scores the same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale as a mined one. To the naked eye, and even to most jewelers without specialized equipment, they're indistinguishable. Only specific detection instruments built for this exact purpose can reliably tell them apart.

Which should you choose?

There's no wrong answer — it comes down to priorities. If getting the largest, highest-quality stone for your budget matters most, lab-grown makes that budget go further. If the rarity and geological origin story of a natural stone matters to you personally, that's a valid reason to choose natural. Both are genuine diamonds either way.
