Diamond Shape Guide

"Shape" and "cut" get used interchangeably, but they mean different things: shape is the outline of the stone when viewed from above; cut refers to the proportions and faceting that determine how it handles light. This guide covers shape — the first thing most people notice, and mostly a matter of personal style.

Round

The most popular shape by a wide margin, and for good reason: round brilliant cuts are engineered to maximize light return, giving the most sparkle of any shape. Timeless and versatile, it suits nearly every setting style.

Oval

An elongated round, oval diamonds keep most of round's brilliance while appearing larger per carat thanks to their length. The elongated shape can also flatter the finger by creating a slimming visual effect.

Cushion

A square or rectangular shape with rounded corners and soft edges — the name comes from its pillow-like outline. Cushion cuts blend vintage romance with strong brilliance, and pair especially well with halo settings.

Emerald

A rectangular shape with step-cut facets (parallel lines rather than triangular facets), emerald cuts prioritize clarity and a glassy, hall-of-mirrors effect over maximum sparkle. Because inclusions are more visible in this cut, clarity grade matters more here than in brilliant cuts.

Princess

A square brilliant cut, princess combines the sharp, modern lines of a square shape with strong sparkle. It's the second most popular shape after round, and tends to be more affordable per carat since it retains more of the rough diamond during cutting.

Pear

A hybrid of round and marquise, tapering to a single point — sometimes called a teardrop. Worn with the point toward the fingertip, it elongates the finger; a genuinely distinctive choice that still reads as classic.

Radiant

A rectangular or square cut with trimmed corners and brilliant faceting, radiant cuts combine the sparkle of a round with the geometric structure of an emerald cut.

Marquise

An elongated shape with pointed ends, marquise cuts maximize apparent size — their large surface area makes them look bigger than their actual carat weight compared to most other shapes.

Asscher

A square step-cut, similar in spirit to emerald but with a more pronounced, symmetrical Art Deco look and larger step facets.

Heart

The most literal romantic symbol among diamond shapes, requiring precise symmetry between its two lobes to look right. A distinctive, sentimental choice.

Choosing between them

There's no hierarchy here — shape is the most personal decision in the whole process. If you're unsure, round and oval are the safest, most universally flattering starting points; the rest are about finding the outline that feels most like the person wearing it.
